Jersey City officers responded to a domestic incident yesterday and were met with a very distraught and belligerent husband. The defendant was subsequently arrested after he refused to cooperate and assaulted two police officers who were keeping him away from his home according to police reports. When it was all said and done the defendant racked up a long list of criminal charges including Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, making Terroristic Threats, Resisting Arrest, Obstruction of Justice, and Disorderly Conduct.
The incident quickly escalated after police responded to the defendant’s home during the mid afternoon. According to reports, the defendant was involved in a recent prior domestic violence incident that had resulted in a restraining order which ordered that the defendant not return to the house. The police requested that the defendant produce some documentation from a judge that allowed him access to the home. However, the questioning quickly became argumentative with the defendant and another man who both appeared to be visibly intoxicated. They refused to listen to police and insisted that they be allowed into the home to retrieve some items. The situation came to a boil when the defendant threatened the police officer’s by shouting, “You f—ing cops, I’m going to kill you”. At the this point police tried to place him under arrest but the defendant punched at the officers and kicked one in the groin. During the struggle the defendant also suffered some injuries after being punched in the face. Both the officer and the defendant were taken to Jersey City Medical Center for treatment of their injuries. The article can be found on nj.com if you would like to read more about this story.
The defendant was taken to county jail and appeared in Central Judicial Processing (“CJP”) this afternoon via video link before the judge. The defendant’s bail was set at $2,500 with 10% cash option. The seems a little low given the severity of the charges but it could be indicative of the fact that the injuries to the officers were not severe. Either way, these are felony charges and the defendant will be required to appear in Hudson County Superior Court to handle the charges. The terroristic threats and aggravated assault on the police officer are third degree crimes which are punishable by 3 – 5 years in state prison.
