Bayonne NJ Shoplifting Charges

A Bayonne man was charged with shoplifting after he tried to steal two 24-inch TVs from Wal-Mart located at 500 Bayonne Crossing Way on Thursday around 3 PM according to police reports. The man was detained by loss prevention personnel and the police were called to the scene.

At the Wal-Mart, police said they spoke with a security officer who said he saw the man, place two 24-inch televisions in his shopping cart and attempt to leave the store. When approached by store security, Brigantti admitted to the crime and handed over the televisions, valued at more than $400. He was subsequently arrested and charged with shoplifting and also held on a bench warrant from Gillette. Shoplifting has become a much more common crime in recent years with the economic recession hitting areas like the tri-state especially hard. If you are arrested for shoplifting in Bayonne then you will normally be required to appear in the Bayonne Municipal Court to address you charges. However, in a case like this where the amount of merchandise is over $200.00 the charges will be upgraded to 4th Degree Shoplifting, which is an indictable felony crime that will be handled at Hudson County Superior Court in Jersey City. Defendants will normally receive a CJP court date to initially appear on the accusations. New Jersey takes shoplifting charges very seriously and municipal courts will often not downgrade the charge. Moreover, our state has guidelines for mandatory incarceration for repeat offenders. Therefore it is always recommended that you have an experienced New Jersey Shoplifting Lawyer defend you against these crimes.
